Nonviolent Communication

What this book is about

Nonviolent Communication introduces a four-part framework centered on observations, feelings, needs, and requests. Marshall Rosenberg uses the model to help readers move away from blame and toward clearer descriptions of experience and responsibility. The approach can support empathy and more specific communication when it is practiced flexibly and in good faith. It should not be used to pressure someone into dialogue, soften the reality of abuse, or imply that perfect wording can make every interaction safe.

About the author

Marshall B. Rosenberg was a psychologist, mediator, educator, and author. He founded the Center for Nonviolent Communication and developed a communication model organized around observations, feelings, needs, and requests. His work has been used in relationships, schools, organizations, and conflict-resolution settings. The model is most helpful when approached as a practice of empathy and clarity rather than a script used to control another person’s response.

Kristin says

This book has been an education in understanding the process of communication. Rosenberg summarizes NVC in four steps: observation, feelings, needs, and request. Read it when you need a new way to communicate and want to be challenged.
