Man’s Search for Meaning
What this book is about
Man’s Search for Meaning combines Viktor Frankl’s account of surviving Nazi concentration camps with an introduction to logotherapy, his meaning-centered approach to psychotherapy. Frankl reflects on suffering, freedom, responsibility, and the human capacity to choose a stance even under devastating circumstances. The book has helped many readers consider how purpose can coexist with pain without pretending that suffering is desirable or simple. It contains descriptions of extreme trauma and the Holocaust, so readers may want to approach it with care and support.
About the author
Viktor E. Frankl was an Austrian psychiatrist, neurologist, author, and Holocaust survivor. He founded logotherapy, a psychotherapy approach centered on meaning, responsibility, and the stance a person takes toward unavoidable suffering. His writing was shaped by both clinical work and his imprisonment in Nazi concentration camps. Man’s Search for Meaning remains his most widely read introduction to those experiences and ideas.
Kristin says
I read this in graduate school and fell in love with it immediately. Viktor Frankl tells of his experiences as an Auschwitz inmate and the therapeutic method he later founded from what he observed and learned. The book helps put life into perspective.
