Trauma is not measured only by what happened.
It can also be understood through what your mind and body had to do to survive—and what keeps happening now. Trauma-related distress may show up as intrusive memories, avoidance, hypervigilance, shutdown, shame, sleep problems, relationship conflict, substance use, or a persistent sense that you should be “over it” but are not.
Care can include
- Understanding current symptoms and the context around them
- Building present-day safety, support, and regulation
- Working with attachment and family-of-origin patterns
- Processing selected experiences through EMDR or another appropriate method
- Exploring body responses through Brainspotting or mindful awareness
- Strengthening boundaries, choice, self-compassion, and connection
You will not be asked to tell everything at once.
Trauma therapy begins with assessment, goals, and a shared understanding of pace. Detailed disclosure is not automatically required, and focused processing does not begin until we have discussed readiness, benefits, risks, alternatives, and consent.
